SAP and EBS

Recently i posted my views for the questions on a forum, having it here for discussion.....


Following are my understanding and only my personal view.


1. Can anyone please clarify what's the diff in SAP and EBS.

SAP and EBS are ERP solutions as you know, business wise its just a comfort factor which makes customer to choose either SAP or Oracle. To be straight SAP doesnt allow you to do customizations as it can be done in Oracle, this is what makes SAP tightly integrated less error prone. Both use their own way of programming which is the answer for your second question below. SAP has its own standards and Oracle too has its legacy. 2. In SAP ABAP is used for programming purposes. what is equivalent in EBS to that.?

ABAP is a programing language created by SAP and it is similar to any other programming language. Its quite similar to COBOL. This was first used as a reporting purpose by SAP and later used extensively for application programing. For me equivalent for ABAP is PL/SQL in EBS or if i need to compare with reporting or form tool in EBS then it would be D2k.

'Linux-x86_64 Error: 28: No space left on device' While trying to start the database -- Error

SQL> startup mount pfile='/tmp/initdlfasp12.ora'
ORA-27102: out of memory
Linux-x86_64 Error: 28: No space left on device


This as you can see is on Linux x86 with 64 bit processor. We got this error after we changed SGA on 10gR2 database. So was sure that this is something to do with the OS.

Parameters to check for this are shmall.

shmall is the total amount of shared memory, in pages, that the system can use at one time.

$cat /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax
53687091200

$ getconf PAGE_SIZE
4096

As per Oracle SHMALL should be set to the total amount of physical RAM divided by page size.

Our system has 64GB memory, so change kernel.shmall = 1024 * 1024 * 1024 * 64 / 4096 = 16777216


Once this value is calculated you can modify Linux system configuration file directly.

$ su - root
vi /etc/sysctl.conf file:
kernel.shmall=16777216

and

# sysctl -p

Once this is done the database was started without any problem.
